On 17 April 2024, at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in the capital of the Republic of Serbia, Belgrade, cooperation for the development of science and knowledge transfer was established between the Embassy and the Copernican Academy. The former institution was represented by Rafał Perl, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland, while the latter was represented by Dr Witold Mazurek, Professor SGMK, Director of the Copernican Academy Office. Both parties expressed their willingness to provide mutual organisational support in the implementation of research projects, conferences, symposia and scientific seminars devoted to the life and scientific legacy of the great Polish scientist, Nicolaus Copernicus.
During the meeting, possibilities for cooperation in order to promote the Copernican idea among Polish and Serbian educational institutions were discussed. His Excellency Ambassador Rafał Perl pointed out that the figure of the astronomer still remains poorly known not only in the scientific community of Serbia, but also in the Polish community here. He suggested that the Copernican exhibition donated to him would be presented at an educational fair in Serbia.
Director Witold Mazurek offered that the Copernican Academy, through the Embassy, would provide Mrs Oliver Sindjelić, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Niš, the Association of Poles “Boleslawiec” in the municipality of Prnjavor and Polish educational institutions in Serbia with an exhibition on the life and work of Nicolaus Copernicus together with reprints of the first edition of “De revolutionibus orbium coelestium”.
The interlocutors also considered the possibility of a series of lectures dedicated to Nicolaus Copernicus by, among others, Prof. Christopher M. Gorski, Secretary General of the Copernican Academy, and other scientists, members of the General Assembly of the Copernican Academy, including Nobel Prize winners.
