St. Spirit Hospital in Frombork – Museum of the History of Medicine, Nicolaus Copernicus Museum

November 6, 2025

Located in the eastern part of Frombork, St. Spirit Hospital stands out alongside the Cathedral Hill complex as one of the city’s most remarkable and valuable historical buildings. Founded by the Warmian chapter as a shelter for the sick, poor, and elderly residents, the hospital symbolized centuries of care for those unable to care for themselves. The hospital building, together with the Gothic Chapel of St. Anne, dates back to the first half of the 15th century and remains the only hospital monument in Poland to preserve its original form since the early 17th century.

Nicolaus Copernicus also left his mark on this place, practicing medicine here and treating both church dignitaries and local residents of Frombork. Today, the building functions as a museum, preserving the tradition of medical knowledge. Visitors can explore historic surgical instruments, medical carts and chairs from past centuries, anatomical models, and thoughtfully curated exhibits on the history of epidemics, historical understandings of disease, and methods used to prevent them. Among the museum’s most valuable features are medieval wall paintings depicting the Last Judgment and allegories of human weaknesses, two bathing stoves, epitaph plaques, and a pulpit.

One of the most moving aspects of the visit is the frescoes in the chapel. They served not only as decoration but also as a teaching tool, reminding viewers that mercy and care for others form a shared responsibility.

The site illustrates the deep historical connection between science, faith, and the ethical commitment to helping others. The garden surrounding the building highlights that herbal remedies formed the basis of traditional treatment.

St. Spirit Hospital presents the history of medicine in a vivid and engaging way, leaving a lasting impression. It appeals not only to medical history enthusiasts but also to anyone fascinated by the heritage of human care.

We sincerely thank Jagoda Semków, curator at the Nicolaus Copernicus Museum in Frombork, for guiding us through this captivating site and sharing its history.
