On Monday, March 3, at the invitation of Radio Bogoria, Prof. Krzysztof Górski visited the Planetarium and Astronomical Observatory in Grodzisk Mazowiecki. During the visit, he gave an interview in which he emphasized the importance of such facilities for popularizing science among young people.
Professor Górski noted that the development of science and technology should not be limited only to large cities. The establishment of planetariums and observatories in smaller towns is an investment in future generations of scientists. It is in these places that a fascination with science can begin.
In towns where there was a technical school with a planetarium, not only the entire student and pupil body was involved, but also the local townspeople, who would come and observe celestial phenomena, comet flybys, asteroids, and such in real-time… (…) It seems to me that astronomy in general is one of the easier sciences to popularize because it is very visual and currently offers extremely high-quality images of celestial objects, which, back when I was young, were not yet so easily communicable… (…) In my opinion, it is one of the most effective fields for introducing people to an interest in science in general.
The Professor also spoke about the Nicolaus Copernicus Academy, established in 2023, and its associated Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School, as modern initiatives created to enable Polish students and doctoral candidates to cooperate with international experts and develop their competencies within the country, without the need to go abroad.
The point was to benefit from creating an academic, collegial body in which we have a significant participation of colleagues from abroad who are interested in establishing their presence here in Poland (…) to enable Polish students to have contact with truly top-tier, world-class scientists.
We extend our sincere thanks to Ms. Agnieszka Goleniak, head of the Radio Bogoria newsroom, for the invitation to Grodzisk Mazowiecki and for conducting the interview.
We also thank Mr. Paweł Wasilewski, Educational Manager of the Planetarium and Astronomical Observatory in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, for guiding the Secretary General through the Planetarium, explaining the vision behind the facility, and presenting its resources.
We are grateful for the commitment to the development of astronomical education.
