Polish Students Shine at the International Economics Olympiad

September 25, 2025

The International Economics Olympiad has wrapped up, and Polish high school students brought home an impressive four medals from Greece – three silver and one bronze.

On August 22–23, 2025, representatives from 28 countries competed in three rounds in Olympia, Greece, testing their economic knowledge. More than 120,000 high school students from four continents participated in national qualifying rounds. Poland’s team consisted of winners of the 38th National Economics Knowledge Olympiad.

The Polish students’ achievement earned high praise from Dr. Mariusz Andrzejewski, a member of the Nicolaus Copernicus Academy’s Chamber of Economic and Management Sciences:

“Congratulations to the young Polish economists! Participating in national competitions and reaching the international stage has a huge impact on the academic development of these students. It prepares them not only for successful careers but also for taking on important roles in national and international organizations. I would also like to recognize the Polish Economic Society and its members, who have organized the National Economics Knowledge Olympiad for decades, helping nurture generations of students with solid theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills.”

Medal winners for Poland:

  • Silver: Szymon Jackowski (Warsaw), Jakub Zalewski (Toruń), Antoni Pokora (Warsaw)
  • Bronze: Zuzanna Augustyniak (Warsaw)

Polish representatives earned their spots in the international competition through the national Olympiad. Ewa Trybuchowicz, Director of the Polish Economic Society, highlighted the importance of these competitions:

“The National Economics Knowledge Olympiad, which selects Poland’s team for the International Economics Olympiad, has been held for nearly 40 years. Its laureates and finalists now hold prestigious positions in academia and business. Examples include Piotr Bujak, Director of Economic Analysis at PKO BP; Dr. Przemysław Kwiecień, Chief Economist at XTB; and Grzegorz Maliszewski, Chief Economist at Bank Millennium. Winning the national Olympiad exempts students from entrance exams at top Polish economic universities and is considered for various scholarships, including Ministry of Education grants. Annual evaluations show that nearly 60% of participants say the Olympiad motivated them to pursue higher education.”

The success of Poland’s team also demonstrates the strong potential of Polish students in economics, which often translates into successful careers in business and finance.

Prof. Zbigniew Krysiak, a member of the Nicolaus Copernicus Academy’s Chamber of Economic and Management Sciences, emphasized:“Olympiads reveal participants’ broad knowledge and their potential to contribute to the economy. Polish universities that collaborate with high schools through targeted academic programs can attract and retain top talent. It’s important to note that many students in Poland perform at the same high level as this year’s medalists.”
