Among dozens of medieval graffiti discovered on the walls of the bishop’s castle cloisters in Lidzbark Warmiński, one particularly stands out. It depicts a set of concentric circles which, according to researcher Dr. hab. Adam Szweda from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, resemble the diagram of the heliocentric model of the Solar System – the very one proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus.
This inscription likely dates back to the time when Copernicus resided in the castle as a canon and physician to the bishop. It may serve as a symbolic testament to the groundbreaking ideas born within these walls. Did Copernicus himself sketch this mark? While it is impossible to confirm this unequivocally, the form and historical context strongly invite such speculation.
