Along the Trail of Nicolaus Copernicus – Stop 1: Lidzbark Warmiński

May 8, 2025

On 5–6 May, the Akademia Kopernikańska inaugurated a new outreach initiative entitled “Along the Trail of Nicolaus Copernicus.” The first stop took place in Lidzbark Warmiński – the town where Nicolaus Copernicus spent ten years of his life, working alongside the Bishop of Warmia and developing his expertise in astronomy, mathematics, and economics.

The aim of the project is to create opportunities for direct engagement between local communities and scholars of the Copernican Academy, representing the five Copernican disciplines. These meetings provide an opportunity to jointly explore the legacy of the great scholar and inspire reflection on its relevance in the contemporary world.

During the two-day visit, the Academy’s delegation visited:

– The City Hall of Lidzbark Warmiński, where a meeting was held with the Mayor and other local leaders actively involved in promoting knowledge about Copernicus’s life and heritage.

– Primary School No. 1 named after Nicolaus Copernicus, where a meeting took place with the school’s administration.

– The Castle of the Warmian Bishops, accompanied by the curator.

As part of the project, reprints of two works by Copernicus were formally presented to the Mayor: De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres) and Monetae cudendae ratio (Treatise on the Minting of Coin). The same publications were also donated to the Castle of the Warmian Bishops and to Primary School No. 1, becoming part of their local educational and museum collections.

Additionally, two sets of the exhibition “Nicolaus Copernicus – A Pilgrimage to the Stars” were donated. The exhibition consists of 12 roll-up panels and, like the reprints, was provided for educational purposes. The recipients were the General Secondary School named after Kazimierz Jagiellończyk and Primary School No. 1 named after Nicolaus Copernicus.

On the second day, a lecture session was held at the Cultural Centre in Lidzbark Warmiński, featuring four presentations addressed to young people and participants of the University of the Third Age. The event attracted considerable interest – the hall was filled to capacity, and attendees actively engaged in the meeting with science.

The Value of the Project for the Copernican Academy

“Along the Trail of Nicolaus Copernicus” is not only a promotion of knowledge about the great astronomer, but also a platform for the exchange of experience between Academy scholars and the local community. Meetings held in places associated with Copernicus’s activity make it possible to update knowledge, adapt methods of communication to the local context, and inspire future educational and research initiatives.
