Heliocentric Graffiti in Lidzbark Castle – A Trace of Copernicus?
Among the dozens of medieval graffiti discovered on the walls of the cloisters in the Bishops’ Castle in Lidzbark Warmiński, one stands out in particular. It depicts a series of concentric circles which, according to Dr. Adam Szweda of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, resemble a schematic representation of the heliocentric model of the solar system — the kind proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus.
This inscription, most likely created during the time Copernicus resided at the castle as a canon and the bishop’s physician, could be a symbolic testament to the groundbreaking ideas that emerged within these walls. Did Copernicus draw this symbol himself? Its form and historical context provoke such reflections; however, we cannot say so with certainty.
